Airstrip Neighborhood

Zone 2

Leader: Robin Dowden

The Airstrip Youth Group Neighborhood borders Sanctuary and Karagita just off Moi South Lake Road, the main road to the
flower farms. This area makes up the largest slum in Naivasha, Kenya. These neighborhoods share a common market area.
The name of the neighborhood is determined by which side of the market they sit. The homes in the Airstrip neighborhood border
a rough, dirt airstrip and are typically constructed of mud. Only some of the homes have access to electricity. Shop keeping
such as a green grocer is common in this area. Sheep and chickens are also reared here.
You may notice in many profiles that a number of youth are completely orphaned or abandoned at a young age. They
typically are taken in by a relative, guardian or generous community member until they are old enough to sustain themselves.
Also, when you see youth living in semi-permanent or temporary housing, it means that they are living on government-owned
land which can be taken from them at any time. Inua works diligently to ensure that all youth in the program are in safe
housing and have enough bedding for each family member.
